The US profile uses required flow in GPM as a modest capacity component, then distinguishes point-of-use or small, standard whole-house, and high-demand whole-house project classes. Natural gas, electric, or propane and non-condensing or condensing technology adjust the installed subtotal. Existing tankless replacement, tank-to-tankless conversion, or complex/new installation defines the project path.
The UK profile uses L/min demand with small or point-of-use, standard domestic, and higher-demand domestic classes. Electric or gas energy source and like-for-like replacement, new instantaneous installation, or complex conversion define the main scope. It does not model a stored cylinder.
Capacity begins with simultaneous demand and temperature rise
A flow number does not select equipment by itself. The professional design must consider which fixtures may run together, desired outlet conditions, incoming-water temperature, required temperature rise, pressure, distribution, and the product's rated performance under those conditions.

Tank-to-tankless conversion is not a like-for-like swap
An existing tankless unit may already have suitable water, energy, venting, drainage, mounting, and controls. A storage-to-instantaneous conversion can require new routing, larger or different energy supply, venting or combustion arrangements for gas equipment, electrical upgrades, condensate management for some systems, wall or location work, and old-tank removal.
Ask the quote to separate appliance supply, standard labour, each infrastructure change, permits, commissioning, and restoration. The calculator keeps conversion and upgrades explicit so normal installation is not counted twice.
Electrical and gas capacity can control feasibility
Whole-house electric instantaneous equipment may place substantial demand on the electrical installation. Gas equipment may require assessment of supply capacity, pipework, combustion air, venting, and exhaust. Existing service presence does not prove adequate capacity.
Location, access, water routes, and removal

Compare rated products using the same draw pattern and local energy prices. Include standby, distribution, controls, maintenance, and any changed usage without promising payback.
