One route, two different heating projects
An installed forced-air furnace model in USD and BTU: natural gas, electric, oil, or propane; standard, high, or premium/high-AFUE efficiency; installation, removal, permit, thermostat/controls, ductwork, and utility modifications.
An installed boiler model in GBP and square metres: gas combi, system, conventional/heat-only, electric, or oil boiler; like-for-like, type conversion, or relocation/complex installation; controls, magnetic filter, power flush, and radiator work.
The UK configuration does not estimate a US-style forced-air furnace. Boiler also has a separate catalog calculator route for its own future content cluster, but this article follows the live UK model attached to the requested Furnace calculator.
How the calculator builds the replacement range
For the US, fuel type provides the main installed project allowance. BTU capacity adds only a modest sizing component calibrated around a normal replacement; the full project is not multiplied by BTU. Efficiency adjusts the installed subtotal, while installation changes and selected upgrades remain fixed allowances.
For the UK, boiler type supplies the installed allowance and floor area adds only modest system-sizing context. Boiler-type conversion, relocation, controls, magnetic filtration, power flushing, and radiator work remain explicit fixed choices.
Equipment size requires load assessment
US furnace capacity is expressed in BTU, but square footage cannot determine the correct output by itself. Climate, design temperatures, insulation and air leakage, windows, orientation, volume, internal gains, ducts, and the equipment's efficiency affect the heating-load calculation.
UK property area is similarly only planning context. Boiler selection depends on building heat loss, distribution temperatures, radiators, hot-water arrangement and demand, controls, fuel, and system design. Oversizing is not a substitute for assessment.
Fuel, boiler type, and compatibility
US natural-gas, electric, oil, and propane furnaces have different equipment, fuel, electrical, combustion, venting, and site requirements. A fuel change is not a routine like-for-like replacement and may expand beyond the calculator's normal scope.
UK gas combi, system, conventional or heat-only, electric, and oil boilers connect to different hot-water, pipework, controls, flue, fuel, and distribution arrangements. A type conversion or relocation can affect cylinders, tanks, pipework, condensate, electrics, gas or oil supply, and finishes; the calculator's conversion allowance is planning scope, not a complete design.
Efficiency ratings describe equipment, not guaranteed bills
ENERGY STAR explains AFUE as the share of incoming fuel converted to space heat rather than lost under the test method. Higher-rated equipment can cost more and may require different venting, condensate, controls, or installation work.
Actual cost depends on climate, load, fuel or electricity rates, ducts or hydronic distribution, controls, installation, maintenance, building envelope, and household settings. Do not turn an AFUE difference or a boiler rating into promised savings or payback.
Installation scope can outweigh equipment price
| Scope | US furnace | UK boiler |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution | Duct transitions or modifications; full replacement excluded | Radiator allowance, pipework/system condition; complete replacement excluded |
| Controls | Thermostat or control upgrade | Smart/Wi-Fi heating controls |
| Combustion/exhaust | Fuel-specific venting, combustion air, condensate, and code context | Flue, air supply, condensate, boiler location, fuel-specific requirements |
| System protection | Project-specific filtration, airflow, and commissioning | Magnetic filter and power flush are explicit options |
| Project path | Like-for-like, moderate modification, or complex replacement | Like-for-like, boiler-type conversion, or relocation/complex installation |
Labour, access, removal, and commissioning
Labour can include protection, disconnection by qualified trades, removal, equipment placement, connections, distribution transitions, controls, venting or flue work, condensate, testing, commissioning, permits or notification, documentation, and cleanup. Access through attics, basements, cupboards, stairs, roofs, or restricted service areas can alter the plan.
The US calculator exposes old-furnace removal and permit allowances. The UK installed boiler baseline and quote should be checked for removal and disposal rather than assuming the same selectable structure.
Gas, combustion, carbon monoxide, oil, and electrical safety
CPSC identifies malfunctioning fuel-burning furnaces as possible carbon-monoxide sources and recommends professional installation and service. GOV.UK Approved Document J covers air supply, combustion-product discharge, and building protection in England. Requirements elsewhere vary.
HSE states that domestic gas work in Great Britain must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer competent for that work. Oil and electrical systems likewise require appropriate qualifications and applicable approvals.
Overlooked replacement costs
- Load or heat-loss assessment and system design
- Permit, notification, inspection, testing, and commissioning
- Removal, disposal, access, platforms, and finish repair
- Duct, pipework, radiator, airflow, or distribution correction
- Thermostat, controls, electrical, gas, oil, venting/flue, condensate, or utility work
- Filter, flushing, water quality, and system-protection work
- Temporary heating, accommodation, or emergency scheduling
How this differs from HVAC and Heat Pump content
This pillar follows the heating appliance on the Furnace calculator route. It does not budget a combined heating-and-cooling replacement, which belongs to the HVAC Replacement guide. It does not price or recommend a heat-pump system, which belongs to the Heat Pump Installation guide and Heat Pump vs HVAC comparison.
Central AC, complete duct replacement, heat-pump distribution changes, and whole-system conversions should not be absorbed into a furnace-only quote.
Create comparable replacement quotations
- Obtain the appropriate load or heat-loss assessment.
- Select the native US furnace or UK boiler system—not a translated proxy.
- Define like-for-like work, conversion, relocation, distribution, controls, and utilities.
- Identify removal, access, permits or notification, testing, commissioning, and documents.
- Separate optional upgrades and excluded building work.
- Compare complete installed scope, rated performance, warranty, and service support.

Frequently asked questions
Can house area determine furnace or boiler size?+
No. Area is only planning context. US furnace capacity requires an appropriate heating-load assessment; UK boiler selection requires project-specific heat-loss, hot-water, distribution, and system assessment.
Does higher efficiency guarantee lower bills?+
No. Rated efficiency is one input. Climate, load, fuel or electricity rates, distribution, controls, installation, maintenance, and household operation affect actual cost.
Is ductwork included with a US furnace replacement?+
Only the selected ductwork-modification allowance is included. Complete duct replacement, sealing, redesign, or balancing requires separate assessment and pricing.
Does the UK profile estimate a furnace?+
No. The UK side of this calculator is explicitly a boiler-replacement model covering gas combi, system, conventional or heat-only, electric, and oil boilers.
Are permits, controls, and removal included?+
The US calculator provides separate permit, controls, removal, ductwork, and utility allowances. The UK model separately presents controls, magnetic filter, power flush, and radiator work.
Who should perform combustion-appliance work?+
Use appropriately licensed or qualified heating professionals. In Great Britain, gas work requires a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer, while oil work requires appropriate competence such as OFTEC where applicable.
