Existing driveway removal
An existing driveway can make replacement different from a new-surface planning scenario. The US Driveway calculator presents removal as a separate area-based allowance when selected, so it is visible alongside the new-surface component.
The UK profile has separate wording for normal installation, substantial excavation or groundwork, and drainage considerations. It should not be treated as a converted copy of the US removal approach.
Removing an existing asphalt driveway
Use the removal selection only when an existing-surface removal scenario applies. The calculator does not describe demolition techniques or supply a universal disposal price.

Why driveway area matters twice in some replacement projects
Area can affect the new-surface benchmark and, in a US replacement scenario, the removal allowance. This is not double counting because the two calculations represent different project components: one is the new surface and one is removal of the existing surface.

Site preparation, grading and difficult conditions
A lower surface benchmark does not guarantee a lower complete project estimate when site work differs. The US profile provides Standard site, Additional grading, and Major site work. The UK profile distinguishes normal installation from substantial excavation/groundwork and drainage requirements.
Do not invent drainage or grading rates beyond the stored data. Significant site issues can require a contractor assessment because an online calculator cannot inspect access, ground conditions, or drainage.
Concrete, asphalt, gravel and other current materials
Current US materials include Concrete, Asphalt, Gravel, and Pavers. Current UK materials include Gravel, Tarmac, Concrete, Block paving, and Resin-bound. These are separate market datasets with native terminology and units.
Select the material that matches the intended new surface and use the current benchmark table or calculator. Do not convert an American material rate into a UK estimate or assume categories are identical.
Low, Typical and High
Low is a lower planning scenario. Typical is a practical reference estimate and is not necessarily a published national average. High can reflect upper benchmark ranges or selected supported project conditions.
Review the range with removal and site conditions included where relevant. One Typical number alone can hide the uncertainty of a replacement project.
United States vs United Kingdom driveway replacement methodology
US estimates use USD and square feet, with selected material benchmarks plus area-based existing-driveway removal and supported site-work options.
UK estimates use GBP and square metres with separate UK material, normal-installation, groundwork, and drainage methodology.
